From 1983 to 1996 I lived in Hong Kong where I raised my children, but also worked with Vietnamese Children in the Refugee Camps, was a helper for Riding for the Disabled, became involved with the Calcutta-based Indian charity "Future Hope", and taught English as a Foreign Language to Chinese, Korean and Japanese children.
It was in Hong Kong that my interest in complementary medicine began to grow and on my return to England I enrolled at the Raworth College in Dorking to study Reflexology. After qualifying, I was fortunate enough to be able to help set up a centre for Physiotherapy, Sports Injuries and Complementary Health in the West Sussex village of Cuckfield (now the Clinic at Borde Hill) where I began practising Reflexology.
The Missing Link - Nutrition
My clients were certainly benefiting from their reflexology treatments, but I became increasingly aware there must be more I could do to help them. I believed the missing link had a lot to do with nutrition and lifestyle and returned to Raworth College to study, qualifying in 2003. With this additional knowledge I found myself better able to help my clients reach their health goals.
Holistic v Symptomatic
Working at the Cuckfield clinic with other therapists practising a wide variety of different therapeutic techniques added to my awareness that a “one size fits all” approach doesn't work (a pitfall of orthodox medicine), that several people might be suffering from the same complaint but require a different treatment approach, and that their problems were a reflection of imbalances that were preventing their body from functioning efficiently. It became more and more obvious how important it was to discover the underlying causes of a client's condition as well as to understand their personality, beliefs and feelings about their health, and their treatment expectations. In other words, just treating symptoms was not the answer, that it required looking at each individual as a whole, to find out what made them “tick”, and to understand their lifestyle choices, genetic predisposition, general constitution, even the environment in which they lived. It is this knowledge that makes it possible to provide advice and treatments that stimulate the body to correct imbalances and activate its innate healing ability.
I believe a multi-discipline or integrated approach to health is of great benefit and YouNique offers a variety of therapeutic approaches from a number of experienced practitioners. I also believe that education is the key, and this website is therefore a vehicle for passing on information about health and well-being in general.
The regular practise of massaging babies has many benefits and I offer courses to parents of newborns aged between about four and twenty weeks. Why massage? Click this link for more information about the benefits and science of regular massage and for details of courses.
